Genesis 12:1-4

Meet the Hero

Abraham left everything he knew to follow God's promise into an unknown land. God told him he would become the father of a great nation, a family more numerous than the stars. Abraham believed, and he went.

What gets skipped is that he was not told where. He was told to go, and the destination came later. He was seventy five years old, settled, with a household and a life already built, and he packed all of it up on the strength of a voice and a promise.

Later God took him outside and told him to count the stars if he could, and said his family would be like that. He had no children at the time. The promise was not a reward for certainty. It was given to a man who asked God more than once how he could possibly know it was true.

He is called the father of faith, and the faith in question looks less like confidence than like going anyway.

Why this hero matters

Abraham shows us that faith often means saying yes before we can see the whole road, trusting that God keeps His promises.

Children are asked to trust adults constantly without being given the reasons, so they understand this better than we expect. What they do not usually hear is that the trusting is allowed to be hard, and that a person can ask questions out loud and still be counted faithful.

Abraham did both. That is part of why he comes first.
