Genesis 22:1-14
Meet the Hero
His name means he laughs, after the sound his mother made when she was told he was coming. He is the only one of the fathers named for somebody else's reaction to him.
The mountain is the story everyone knows, and it is worth telling gently. Isaac is old enough to carry the wood himself and old enough to notice what is missing from the climb, and he asks about it. His father answers that God will provide. Then God does, and there is a ram caught in a thicket.
He is not the loudest of the fathers. He stayed where he was put, dug his father's wells open again after they had been filled in, and kept the promise moving quietly to the next generation.
Why this hero matters
Isaac reminds us that God provides, even in the hardest moments, and that He can be trusted with the things we hold most dear.
He also belongs to every child who is not the dramatic one. He does not wrestle an angel or leave his country. He stays, and he digs wells, and the promise survives because somebody was willing to do that.
Not every faithful life is a story with a mountain in it. Most of them are wells.
