Genesis 32:22-31
Meet the Hero
Before that he was, honestly, hard to like. He bought his brother's birthright with a bowl of soup on a bad day, and he took the blessing meant for that brother by lying to a blind old man. Then he ran, and spent twenty years being outmanoeuvred by someone better at his own game than he was.
The wrestle happens on the night before he has to face the brother he cheated. A stranger meets him in the dark and they struggle until dawn, and Jacob will not let go without a blessing. He gets one. He also gets a dislocated hip and a new name.
He limped for the rest of his life. The blessing and the limp arrived in the same moment.
Why this hero matters
Jacob reminds us that God can meet us in our struggles and turn them into a new name, a new purpose, and a lasting blessing.
He is the proof that this story does not only take the people who were good at it from the start. Jacob lies, runs, and argues, and God stays with him through all of it and renames him at the end.
For a child who already suspects they are not the easy one, that may be the most important thing in the book.
