Genesis 17:15-16
Meet the Hero
She left home when Abraham did. Whatever we say about his going, she went too, and she waited through every year of the promise not arriving.
The laugh is the best door into her story. She is behind the tent listening the way you do when you are not certain you are meant to hear, and she is ninety, and it is simply funny. Then she is asked why she laughed, and she says that she did not, because she was afraid. Everyone in that moment knew that she had.
Her son's name means he laughs. The sound she made in disbelief became the name of the answer.
Why this hero matters
Sarah reminds us that God's timing is not our own, and that He keeps His word even when the waiting feels impossibly long.
Most heroes are introduced by something they did. Sarah is better introduced by something she waited for, and she waited badly, in the way real people wait. She is still the mother of nations at the end of it.
Children spend most of their lives waiting for things somebody else controls. Sarah is the one who tells them that waiting badly does not disqualify you.
